Why the name, Radical Jack?
Radical Jack was a nickname created by the establishment press for myself, Jack Lieberman, when I was a leader of the Students For A Democratic Society (SDS) chapter at Florida State University in 1968. At the time SDS was outlawed by the State of Florida Board of Regents for being a "subversive organization".
The Radical Jack nickname along with the banning of SDS were an attempt by the power structure in Florida to isolate the progressive movement by creating a climate of fear based on stereotypes that would be used to block a serious public discussion of the issues being raised by the student movement. Those issues, of war, racism, sexism, environmental degradation and class oppression were issues that the power structure did not wish to seriously address.
I was eventually expelled from FSU in 1971 for teaching a course on revolutionary politics in a Student Government sponsored so called "Free University" program. It seems freedom, then as now, was okay as long as you did not reach too many people with "subversive" ideas!
I am now 64 and while I am older, and hopefully wiser, I have not abandoned the idealism of my youth.
Unfortunately, today it is obvious that the burning issues that motivated my generation into revolutionary activism are still unresolved. As the disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan show, the same military industrial complex still controls the U.S. with the same disastrous results.
So we made a website!
As a result of the encouragement of several members of today's new generation of young revolutionary and progressive activists we have decided to appropriate the nick name of my youth and use it as a symbol of the continuity of the struggles of the sixties today. Hopefully this reincarnation of Radical Jack will create a catchy, easy to remember name for our web site that will be used by activists to promote the progressive and revolutionary movements through the propaganda of the deed, through making a statement with what you wear!
Radical Jack was established to offer activists and collectors of left wing cultural art the opportunity to purchase shirts, posters and other items with progressive and revolutionary art, not widely available in many places. Some t-shirt designs we have available are common yet hard to find locally and some are the artwork of revolutionary struggles of the past. All of our designs are meant to spread progressive political awareness and enlightenment.
